It's definitely not as fun as some of the others on I've mentioned, but it's absolutely worth checking out. The original is possibly the greatest horror film of all time, at least in terms of constantly escalating tension. interesting, I'll give them that.įinally, there's Texas Chainsaw. And then there's the Rob Zombie movies, which are. 5 is where the wheels started to come off, 6 was terrible (although the Producer's Cut is marginally better than the theatrical version), and Resurrection was just a trainwreck (although it's entertaining in an ironic sort of way). Halloween 2, 4, and H20 are pretty good as well.
#HORROR SEMI MOVIE#
Season of the Witch and the reboot are in contention for my second-favorite movie in the series. Obviously John Carpenter's Halloween is bit more serious-minded than the other films I just mentioned, but it's fairly tame by today's standards, so you shouldn't have too much of an issue.

Then there's Freddy vs Jason, which didn't quite reach its full potential but serves as a nice sendoff to the slasher genre.
#HORROR SEMI SERIES#
The Final Nightmare is definitely the low point of the original series and feel free to ignore the remake entirely. 4 is decent and 5 has some nice visuals, but they're definitely a step down from their predecessors. The first three and New Nightmare are all contenders for the best in the series, although they all have goofy elements to them. I also don't think you'd have too much of an issue with the Elm Street movies. The rest are shlocky fun that play well at parties. Part 3 and the remake are kinda bland as well. Aside from a pretty cool third act, the original is relatively forgettable. Jason Lives and The Final Chapter are the highlights. The Friday the 13th movies are mostly just dumb fun. There's also the big four slasher franchises: Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Over the Garden Wall (technically a miniseries but you can watch it in one sitting) The Evil Dead movies (I've also heard good things about Ash vs. Return of The Living Dead (the second and third films are pretty good as well) Ghostbusters 1&2 (haven't played the video game and while I don't despise the remake, it does kinda drop the horror elements and is more of a straightforward comedy) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original and the 1978 version)īoth Mystery of the Wax Museum and House of Wax (1953) Psycho (the sequels are also pretty good)Īlien and Aliens (I also like Prometheus) Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2 (the first one's ok as well, although the two have absolutely nothing to do with one another) Good luck on your journey, I never quite got over horror movies. Creature design was legit and creepy but that's a totally doable horror movie Or Nosferatu, dude you are gonna be fine with a 1922 black & white movie. Some tense moments but largely devoid of jump scares if memory serves. Halloween (the 1978) version is actually really good as an intro to horror. In the last category I'd throw in the Norwegian movie Trollerhunters more of an adventure movie with some tense bits thrown in. Start with poorly-reviewed movies that aren't good enough to scare you, old stuff (save for classics like Alien or Exorcist), or genre mashups like horror-comedy, horror-mystery, etc.
Same with Exists, from the makers of The Blair Witch Project, also with poor reviews. Available on Netflix.įound footage movie about a supposed Apollo 18 mission. Again, more of a thriller/actioner/mystery. It's amazing at sustaining tension and an atmosphere of mystery for the first hour. Here's the trailer and it's just a really good movie to go into blind. It's barely even horror, more thriller, but if you're looking for something to ease you in. I will never not take the opportunity to recommend this movie.
#HORROR SEMI DOWNLOAD#
I think the original Silent Hill is available for a download but it's still the PS1 graphics if that bothers you.Ģ recommendations, coming from someone who's as much of a chickenshit at horror as you are: Resident Evil has a remaster version available on PS4. So the earlier games on both of those series would be a good start. Resident Evil started the Survival Horror genre to become what it is today. Several jump scares so be warned about that. You have the ability to have everyone survive or everyone die depending on how you play the game. The first ones for all of them.ĭo not watch The Exorcist until you know that you are ready for something much scarier.Īs for games, Until Dawn is a horror movie choice based game exclusive to PS4. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street. They're very tame compared to what's coming out now and it'll give you a good foundation.
My recommendation would be the big slashers from the 80s.
